You Gotta Love Dr. Oz – Especially When He Confronts Monsanto and GMOs

I was playing around researching writing projects on Facebook yesterday and came across this awesome video of Dr. Oz asking a panel about GMOs. I really do love to watch Dr. Oz. He always discusses contemporary topics on his show and brings a handful of people who know what they’re talking about to debate the subject. It’s fun to watch! And he’s very well-informed when it comes to health and nutrition so he pipes in when it’s necessary, facilitating a well structured argument.

So, when he had three people on the show to talk about the dangers of GMOs and Monsanto‘s role in the production of them, I was really excited. And it was even better than I imagined it would be. The woman representing Monsanto, or at least the use of GMOs in our food supply, couldn’t intelligently defend herself against the allegations, studies and research that link illnesses to GMOs and especially the Round-Up Ready varieties.  Monsanto, true to form, couldn’t be bothered with participating. Instead they sent a couple of lines of copy to debunk any naysayers in the argument.

The plain truth – the reason Monsanto can’t actually defend itself against these allegations is that Monsanto’s drive behind keeping the public in the dark is purely and simply money. On the show, Dr. Oz mentioned he did a survey asking if people knew they were eating GMOs would they continue to buy and consume them. Well, the response was 80% against consuming them.

That tells me that Monsanto has a lot to lose if the labeling bills passed into law and companies had to let consumers know they were using GMOs to make their products. If food manufacturers can’t sell their products containing GMOs, they will no longer have a reason to do business with Monsanto. It could essentially shut down this monstrous company that bullies farmers and deceives the public. Wouldn’t that be something….

But, alas, today is just another day in the fight against the big food companies, the FDA, Monsanto and the use of GMOs, and our right to know what is in our food supply. Today, I have to go to the grocery and buy more food. I can always make my voice heard with my dollar!

Enjoy the Dr. Oz video…it’s fun to watch! The most important thing is that this subject is now in the mainstream. People are talking about the use of GMOs on prime time television. And that’s a huge leap forward. Yay.

A Small Triumph in the Food Industry Fight – No More Pink Slime!

I just read this news post on U.S. NewsMcDonald’s is discontinuing its use of the “pink slime.” You may not have been aware of this, but that’s what you’ve been eating every time you ate a burger from McDonald’s. And they aren’t the only ones!

I remember when I saw this clip by Jamie Oliver from his Food Revolution show. He demonstrated how meat manufacturers take scraps of meat and turn it into “edible pink slime.”  It made my stomach turn…seriously. I can’t believe what our government has allowed to be passed as food for so many years. Really – who is looking out for the consumers?

Pink slime, in case you aren’t aware, is formed from a scrap meat separating process. The meat manufacturers take scraps that would normally be considered the lowest level of meat and most likely discarded or used for dog food, and treat it with ammonium-hydroxide and run it through a machine. This creates a meat-like paste that Jamie Oliver referred to as pink slime. And this is what they make burger patties from and sell them to fast-food chains everywhere. Gross.

According to the USDA, it’s a process and therefore not an ingredient. So, manufacturers of this pink slime do not have to include the ammonium-hydroxide on their food labels. Leaving consumers none the wiser as to the origin of their meat. And it’s not only beef – this process is used in poultry and pork, as well.

According to Todd Bacon, McDonald’s senior supply chain officer, McDonald’s  discontinued using the pink slime at the beginning of the year and are complying with social interests in the food supply.

He further claimed in a statement to the Daily Mail that the decision “was not related to any particular event, but rather to support our effort to align our global beef raw material standards.”

Well, whether it was or wasn’t related to Jamie Oliver’s show, it seems as though our cries for higher food standards are slowly having an affect. I’m ecstatic to hear that at least McDonald’s is smart enough to listen when the consumer speaks out.

One battle won…many more to go.

11 things you should buy organic on Shine

So, there I was, minding my own business reading stuff on Yahoo and what can you imagine I came across? I read the article, 11 things you should buy organic and I was surprised by some things. The article isn’t 100% about food, for one.

There are a couple of points that talk about BPA, the chemical compound in plastic that has made heating your leftovers in Gladware a big no-no. Now they’ve found it in canned goods. And the BPA is getting into food without it being heated, too. That goes for plastic as well as canned foods. So, water bottles, at least the plastic ones, are out. No more re-using plastic bottles to save the earth because it could give you, among other things, cancer. So, now I have to find a stainless steel bottle instead.

I have to say, most of this stuff I knew about already and try to buy organic when I can. But to hear that there are chemicals and pesticides on ORGANIC food kind of makes me a little nervous. The whole point of buying organic is to avoid these chemicals. Now I’m not sure. Maybe it’s best to just grow my own freakin’ strawberries because then I will know what kinds of things are on my plants. You can kill a lot of things with plain vinegar, water and lemon juice. In Germany they actually mix in some whiskey instead of lemon juice. I don’t know if that’s for the plants or for them. LOL.

But I liked the article…it has some very interesting information in it and I wanted to pass it along to you. I also tend to read comments on practically all articles, blog posts, etc. I read on the internet. I really like to see what people’s reactions are to what’s put out there. I love to read the interactions of people heated on either side of a debate. I’m just morbid like that.

Let me know what you think about what this article says in the comments. I look forward to reading them!

Fitness guru Jack LaLanne, 96, dies at Calif. home – Yahoo! News

I read about Mr. LaLanne‘s passing today and felt a small pang in my chest. This man, who made living room workouts a reality, gave women the notion to lift weights, and generally inspired the world to get fit, lived a long, healthy, full life. He lived nearly a century and exercised nearly every day of it.

Jack LaLanne...looking as fit as ever.

I loved reading about how he had a fitness studio in 1936 where women would lift weights, long before any one else even dreamed of it. His ideas for fitness were so far ahead of their time. I can only imagine a life where he could still be a young man with new innovative ideas in this day and age.

Today I will dedicate my workout to the memory of this true fitness guru. I intend to spend some extra time lifting weights. Today my workout will be longer, harder and more determined than ever. The world will be a lot less colorful without Mr. LaLanne’s enthusiastic approach to life. I just hope we can keep the drive alive.

R.I.P. Mr. Jack LaLanne. You inspired the world!

High-Intensity Workout Plans: Intervals, CrossFit, Rowing, Swimming, and More

High-Intensity Interval Training, or HIIT, has become the latest rage in workouts that burn calories at a faster rate. Several people have used P90X and swear by the results. I myself have been contemplating purchasing the latest from Chalene Johnson, Turbo Fire, a program full of quick workouts that make the most of the HIIT theory. I have been using her Turbo Jam program for several years and I love it!

The idea is to rev up your heart rate for a short amount of time, recover for a short time, then rev up the heart again. According to all the latest research, this method burns calories at a much higher rate.

I was reading an article on Web MD and found a few methods to do at home. So, if you would like to implement HIIT to burn more calories faster, here are a few you can try. Enjoy!

Hooray for Protein – Good News for Meat Lovers

Photo courtesy of Women's Health Magazine

Anyone who knows me knows I love MEAT! I am a meat eater and I haven’t met many animal proteins I don’t like. And when I took the Metabolic Type Test in the DSP I tested as a Protein Type. Obviously.

But today I read this article, The Protein Prescription | Women’s Health Magazine, and got really excited. There is a shift happening in the diet world these days. A shift where eating more protein is recommended. Atkins and Southbeach started out encouraging more protein, but had slightly unbalanced plans. The updated versions of these two programs pushes more protein but doesn’t leave out the healthy carbs. A balanced diet of protein and healthy carbs has become the newest secret to success.

The Diet Solution Program stresses healthy, lean proteins. And for Protein Types more protein options are provided, which makes choosing protein options easier. The real difference between Carb vs. Protein Types is that Carb Types have a higher tolerance for carbs. That means they may be able to eat more carbs than a Protein Type without gaining weight. But the bottom line is everyone still needs a balanced amount of protein and carbs at every meal.

So read on and enjoy! Make protein a part of every meal and you will achieve the success you are looking for.
